Objects in Orifices, and other uncomfortable things

Hey peeps, I'm gonna whip this post out as fast possible, as the end of the week is approaching and I've got lots to finish up at work. I'm still chugging along in the Blog Every Day in May Challenge!

So, without further ado, things that make me uncomfortable...

When you post an embarrassing picture on facebook (right.) and no one likes or comments. Ever.

Then you fight the urge to delete it, am I right?!

PS. This is me chillen (and face planting) in the Lampoul desert, a few hours north of Dakar.

Other Uncomfortable Things

  1. Watching other people embarrass themselves, by my overly sensitive standard of embarrassment. I often have to mute segments of reality shows that involve people going out of their comfort zones. For example, The Friendzone on MTV (has anyone watched this show?! I watched way. too. many. reruns at my hotel in Uganda). People telling longtime crushes they like them... MUTE! Dating shows in general? MUTE!
  2. Public (or really, spontaneous) speaking. This one I'm not proud of. I have been known to forget my name when asked to introduce myself in front of a small group. I have always hated participating in class for this reason, and resort to writing down my comment before speaking—only if I'm absolutely forced to. My palms sweat, my heart pounds, my mind goes blank. Every time.
  3. Confrontation. Yup, I'm non-confrontational (except in romantic relationships, strangely!). Otherwise, any confrontation, be it with friends, coworkers, strangers, whoever, leads to similar symptoms as spontaneous speaking: sweaty palms, pounding heart, and an upset stomach. This is super-frustrating because I end up stuttering and blundering and not defending or explaining myself properly. As a result, #2 and #3 add up to me having some difficulty advocating for myself. Give me a pen and paper, though, and I'll have you convinced by the time you reach the end of the page.
  4. Watching someone bend back a single finger, especially their pinkieegad.
  5. The mere thought of skin growths/diseases. One of my most terrifying dreams featured a small artichoke growing under my skin.
  6. Also, objects in orifices, like your nose or ears. The scene on Girls where Hannah jams the q-tip in her ear KILLED ME,  3k4jhksjdnkjs!!! Same with the wand up the monster's nose in that Harry Potter movie. I COULDN'T WATCH! (This aversion is due to some residual trauma from a tubes/nose incident leading up to my own surgery, but I will spare you the details!)
I could probably come up with some other little ticks that leave me feeling uncomfortable, but I think this list is sufficient, and hopefully not so exhaustive that I come off insanely neurotic!

Have a great weekend :)

This post was written as part of the Blog Every Day in May Challenge (2013).

  1. Don't know why but I am cracking up at "objects in orifices" so true!

    1. Haha, right?! My reaction to seeing "objects in orifices" is to cover my ears/block my nose, close my eyes, and mutter LALALALALA.

      Normal, right?! ;)

  2. Did you mention awkward phone calls to strangers - hmmmm I distinctly remember calling a priest, recommended by your dad, and posing as you for a pre-college interview....
